A Certificate of Character is an official document issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service which states whether a person has any previous convictions recorded against them.
A citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, or a citizen of any foreign country who previously lived in Trinidad and Tobago, may apply for a Certificate of Character.
Members of the public are reminded of the following when requesting a Certificate of Character:
  • All applications must be made online on the TTPS website only, and not at any police station. Use the Certificate of Character Request Form linked at the bottom of this page.
  • While completing the request form, applicants choose the date of their appointment and the preferred police station they wish to visit to have their fingerprints taken.
  • Applicants will receive a receipt with a unique tracking number upon submitting the online request.
  • The applicant is responsible for printing their own application forms on legal size paper and bringing them to the police station on the day of the appointment.
  • The processing fee is TT$50, to be paid at the police station on the day of the appointment.
After completing their appointment, applicants will be advised of when they can return to the police station to collect their Certificate of Character.
Foreign residents will be required to:
  • Have their fingerprints recorded at a Police Station in whatever country they reside.
  • If the fingerprints are not taken at a Police Station, have the fingerprint slip certified by an authorized Notary Public, with the Notary Public's stamp affixed.
  • Supply a copy of their passport showing the applicant's photograph, passport number, date of birth and signature.
  • Send a money order equivalent to fifty TT dollars (TT$50.00) plus the cost of return postage.
